Plants & Planets

The Intersection of Herbalism and Astrology

For thousands of years astrology and herbalism were both taught and practiced hand in hand. For the vast majority of history, medicine people were herbalists AND astrologers. Hippocrates, considered the founder of modern medicine, even said “A physician without a knowledge of astrology has no right to call himself a physician”.

Herbalism and Astrology are both holistic subjects that seek to find relationship and correspondence between plants/planets and people. Astro-Herbalism takes this holistic perspective to the next level, incorporating all three. As the ancient alchemical axiom states, “As above, so below”, herbal astrology applies the influence of cosmological energetics and the language of archetype to more deeply understand people, plants and how their medicine can be used to support our health.

Much of the easily available information about matching plants to planets or astrological signs, is listed ambiguously, without any explanation or reasoning for these correspondences. After this workshop you will be able to fully understand why Dandelion is considered an herb of Jupiter, or why Rose relates to Venus. You will also be able to understand how this information can be applied medicinally.

In the first half of this workshop we will review the 7 planets of herbal astrology, their archetypes, energetics and signatures. The second half will consist of a plant walk where we will identify wild medicinal plants and discuss how they correspond to the planets and and how these correspondences can help us to remember and explain their medicinal uses and deepen our connection to and understanding of them as holistic beings.
